Dermatologist's know that itching in the beard is usually do to either seborrheic dermatitis or an allergic reaction to beard care products.
Both conditions will cause dryness, flaking, itching and redness of the skin under your beard or mustache. To help tell which condition is causing your beard itch:
Seborrheic dermatitis is facial dandruff. Do you have itching, scale or “dry scalp” too? Is there dryness, flaking and even a little redness in your eyebrows, along the sides of your nose or around your ears?
Allergic reactions (called allergic contact dermatitis) will typically happen only where the allergen is applied. In this case, either a shaving product, beard oil, beard or mustache grooming product, or aftershave might be the cause. Some men use shampoos to wash their facial hair and shampoo is usually too strong for facial skin. Did the rash start where you used a particular beard care product? Once the rash starts getting bad it may spread out onto surrounding skin, but it usually starts where the allergen is placed on the skin
The key tip to getting rid of beard itch is to know if you have bearddruff from facial dandruff, or if you are allergic to a beard care product.
I recommend using hypoallergenic products for your beard care to eliminate the risk of allergic reactions. Cleanse your beard with a product like my Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser. It iis a multitasking product because it also creates the perfect shaving consistency. If you think that the cause of your beard itch is seborrhea (facial dandruff, aka bearddruff) then use my Foaming Zinc Cleanser. It fights dandruff anywhere, including beard and mustache skin.
After washing your facial hair, apply a hypoallergenic beard oil that is made with good conditioning agents that boost the appearance of your facial hair and skin. You want a beard oil make with carrier oils that mimic your skin’s natural oils, because this keeps your beard and mustache hairs soft and healthy. My beard oils are made with the best beard and mustache conditioning oils. If you think your beard itch is an allergic rash, start with my very hypoallergenic Sensitive Skin Booster Oil. If you think your beard itch is due to seborrhea, start with my Omega Enriched Booster Oil.
How to apply beard oil:
- Apply a few drops to your fingertips.
- Start from the bottom of your beard or facial hair and snake your fingertips up your facial skin in between your facial hair.
- Once you’ve covered all your facial skin then stroke your beard or mustache hair in a downward fashion to coat the outer surface of your hair and lay the hair down in a well-groomed fashion.
Don’t forget to use the right sunscreen to protect your beard!
Your facial hair may look great but it never 100% prevents sun exposure to the skin underneath. Plus, sun exposed hair takes on a yellow look that is never as attractive as your natural beard or mustache color. You need a very lightweight consistency mineral sunscreen to protect your beard and mustache skin and hair. My Sheer Strength Pure Physical Spray Sunscreen is a popular product with my male patients because it provides dermatologist recommended sun protection in an ultralight product that will not mess-up your well-groomed beard or mustache. Apply it the same way you do your beard oil and wear it daily to fight the appearance of premature aging.
Fight beard itch, and look vital and well-groomed with dermatologist recommended beard care.
In the products listed below, you will see additional skin cleansers and moisturizing creams and lotions. These are some of the most popular facial care products with my male patients and web customers.
