Body Sunscreen and Sun Protection

Why do you need to use only the best sunscreen on your body, arm, leg and neck skin?

Body, arm, leg and neck skin shows signs of premature aging due to sun exposure. Even small amounts of regular UV exposure will cause it. Daily sun protection is the best way to prevent it!

What are some of the most common sign of sun damaged skin on the body, arms, legs and neck that can be prevented?

  • crepey skin,
  • thin skin (atrophy),
  • easy bruising (actinic purpura),
  • uneven skin pigment,
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte (uneven red and brown pigment on the sides of the neck)
  • sun spots (solar lentigines).

Most people associate the changes of sun damage to aging, but it’s not – it’s UV ray damage to skin structure.

As a dermatologist, I recommend that you wear broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen on exposed every day – all day all year, no matter where on the earth you are!  Enjoy the outdoors and be confident that you have the best sun protection possible.

Use only the best body sunscreen for your sun protection to prevent premature skin aging on your body, arm, leg and neck.

Use sun protective clothing to shrink the area of exposed skin that needs sunscreen, then apply sunscreen to what you can’t cover.

Remember, you need to reapply sunscreen,

  • after
    • bathing or washing your skin,
    • swimming,
    • toweling off,
    • sweating,
  • and every 2 hours during prolonged exposure.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.

These body sunscreens are dermatologist recommended, broad spectrum, SPF 30+ and most are water resistant to 40 or 80 minutes.

What are the best sunscreens for the body, arms, legs and neck?

The best sunscreen (previously called sunblock) gives you broad spectrum protection from all the harmful UVA and UVB rays. As a dermatologist who has specialized in treating skin cancer for over 30 years, I'm constantly reviewing the advances in sunscreen formulation and scientific research to be certain that my patients and my family have the best, most advanced sun protection. I’m find out from my patients what products work and what don’t because their skin exam makes it clear.

It's my opinion as a dermatologist that zinc oxide is currently the best sunscreen ingredient for broad spectrum and long-lasting UVA and UVB sun protection.

Plus, technological advances have created zinc oxide that rubs onto your skin invisibly so it's easy to wear every day.

Zinc oxide (and its cousin titanium dioxide) is considered a mineral sunscreen (also called physical sunscreen). When applied to your skin, the mineral sits on top of your skin and much of the UV protection involves bouncing the UV rays off, just like bouncing a ball off of a wall.

Zinc oxide is also hypoallergenic and the best choice for sensitive skin sun protection.

The other type of sunscreen is called chemical sunscreen (confusingly also called "organic" sunscreens). It actually is absorbed into your skin and blocks the sun's rays with a chemical reaction that occurs inside your skin. The reaction creates a little heat, (making you feel hotter in the sun) as it breaks down the chemical sunscreen ingredients so that they aren't there to protect you anymore. This means that your skin steadily runs out of chemical sunscreen when you're in the sun. Chemical sunscreen can also break down in the bottle before you even buy or use the product. I’m not a huge fan!

Which of the two mineral sunscreens are best?

Of the two types of mineral sunscreen ingredients I recommend only zinc oxide and not titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide rubs more invisibly onto your skin and gives better broad spectrum protection. I recommend the zinc oxide used alone at high concentrations, or combined with octinoxate (a chemical sunscreen ingredient that works very uniquely with the zinc oxide) for the best broad spectrum sun protection. Pick products based on your skin type, activities, budget and product preference.
